The Register has an article discussing IBM’s upcoming Cell processor. IBM and Sony have been pretty tightlipped about the Cell but it’s said to pretty impressive, apparrently 10 times faster than anything available today. The proccessor will make it’s first appearance in Sony’s PlayStation 3 but from there they’re looking to move it into the PC and multimedia device markets. The PS3 isn’t expected until 2006 so we’ll have to wait until then so see if it lives up to those claims. When it will make it’s way into other devices probably depends on how well things go with the PS3. So lets wait and see.
It sounds like The Cell could be the ideal powerhouse for move toward converging devices
