Vodacom has just announced the availability of a new location based service on its network called Look4it. It uses Unstructured Supplementary Services Data (USSD2) to provide a menu like interface to information based on the location of the cell you’ve connected to. I’ve tried it out briefly and it’s a bit buggy so far but the service sounds really promising.

It’s great to see location based services being punted by the big networks. Location based services has recieved very little attention here in South Africa, the only exception being the use of GPS by 4x4 and outdoor enthusiasts. So this service, which is available on the large majority of moble phones, has the potencial to introduce the idea of location sensitive information to the masses.

By creating this service they’ve created a market , and can expect competition competion (watch this space!), for location based services…
